After many years on the pill, you have decided to be a mother. You are now ready to take the plunge and want to get pregnant. However, you will not conceive immediately. This will depend on so many factors. If you are overweight or even underweight, will also hinder your desire to have a baby. How is your diet? Are you eating healthy food and drinking a lot of water? Are you getting enough sleep? Sleeping is extremely beneficial as it refreshes your body. Are you still smoking and having alcohol as a daily routine. Therefore in order for you to get pregnant you need to make your body healthy.

Having said that, let us first examine what does the birth control pills actually do. A lot of women will not hesitate in popping in the pills without knowing what they actually do. To their minds as long as they do not get pregnant, they will continue with the pills. The birth control pills do their job by suppressing stimulation of the ovaries to ovulate. Therefore, when you do not ovulate you will not conceive. Ovulation is the process in a female's menstrual cycle by which an egg or eggs are produced.

When you stop taking the birth control pills, your body may need some time to adjust back to your regular menstrual cycle. Some women may return to a regular cycle right away, while others, can take up to a year. However,it is advisable to wait two to three normal menstrual cycles before trying to conceive. This will allow your body time to adjust to life without the extra hormones which comes from the pills. Once your menstrual periods return, your chances to get pregnant is better. However, if regular cycles do not return within six months after you stop taking birth control pills, consult your doctor.

Now let me share with you a true story about my friend, Patty. She was only 17 when she went on the Pill. She took the Pill to control her painful periods, which were messing up her social life and schoolwork. At 25, she married Charles, and they decided to have a baby. Patty stopped taking the Pill. Her menstrual periods did not return but, she gained two stone in weight. She started to diet and began exercising in the gym. With determination and some guidance, she lost the extra weight. Her monthly periods continue to be a little bit irregular, but she got pregnant on their first wedding anniversary.
